Champneys enters India

UK-based Spa operator Champneys has expanded to the subcontinent with the opening of its first spa in India – at the Grand Resort Hotel in Goa.

Champneys Goa has nine treatment rooms, a hair salon, steamrooms, a sauna, manicure and pedicure areas and yoga studios. There will also be three beach treatment rooms providing treatments with a view of the Indian Ocean.

The spa will offer a mix of traditional Indian Ayurvedic treatments with western and facials and bodywraps. The varied range aims to target both local spa-goers as well as the western tourists staying at the 255-room luxury resort.

Ray Payne, operations director for Champneys, said: “We have noted that western tourists want to receive treatments associated with the region they are visiting, such as ayurvedic numbers, while local people are willing to receive western treatments as an alternative to their customary practices.

“Champneys Goa will appeal to both by offering something for everyone.”

Therapists from the four UK Champneys health resorts are currently training local staff to administer the range of western treatments.

Champneys expects the Goa resort to be the first in a line of new openings in the region. The group is currently in negotiations to secure a second location.
