Obesity among children increases

Official figures from the Department of Health show that an increasing number of boys and girls under the age of 11 are now obese.

According to the research, in 2003, 27.7 per cent of children in England aged between two and 10 were overweight, while obesity among the same age group rose from 9.9 per cent to 13.7 per cent between 1995 and 2003.

The greatest increase in obesity was within the eight- to 10-year-old group – from 11.2 per cent in 1995 to 16.5 per cent in 2003.
