Argentina targets UK tourists

Argentina is hoping to lure British tourists to its shores with its new Wine Trail, which was launched at the 25th London International Wine and Spirits Fair in May.

The Wine Trail – which was created in partnership with Wines of Argentina – is being marketed specifically to Britain as part of an £8.5m campaign to attract more European visitors to Argentina.

The country’s secretary of tourism, Carlos Meyer, said: “British tourists are always looking for a new, sophisticated way to enjoy their holidays and the Wine Trail delivers just that.”

The route encompasses a journey through the Andes – from Salta in the north to Patagonia in the south – though tourists can visit vineyards in as few or as many regions as they like.

Several wineries in Mendoza – the biggest wine producing province with 1,200 wineries – have opened restaurants and small hotels for tourists on the trail. More are expected to open soon. Details: www.turismo.gov.ar
