BBC Walking with Beasts Exhibition

For the first time in over a million years, saber-toothed cats can be seen in Aberdeen. This Easter, Satrosphere Science Centre plays host to some exclusive and very exciting visitors from the past, 49 million years in the past to be exact!

The adventure began recently, when Satrosphere opened its doors to the BBC Walking With Beasts Exhibition. The exhibition showcases the science behind the television series of the same name and will teach visitors more about these fantastic creatures and the times in which they lived.

The BBC Walking With Beasts television series documented the rise of the mammals in the wake of the extinction of the dinosaurs, 16 million years previously. In that time, new and ferocious creatures evolved, including the carnivorous Gastornis and the awesome sabre-toothed cat, Smilodon. Despite the advent of fur and feathers, the new dominant species on the block were still very much red in tooth and claw.

The exhibition explores the period after the extinction of the dinosaurs and the arrival of man, a time when woolly mammoths roamed the earth. The beasts on display are so life-like it is easy to imagine how effective they must have been as predators.

Satrosphere's Chief Executive Paul Jennings commented: "We're very excited to be hosting the BBC Walking with Beasts exhibition. The large-scale exhibits give a real sense of what facing one of these mighty creatures must have been like and will leave visitors with a sense of wonderment and hopefully a desire to learn more. With 2009 being the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Darwin few other exhibitions will so clearly demonstrate the evolution of species".

The Walking with Beasts Exhibition is now open to visitors of Satrosphere and is free with the normal price of admission.
