16 Apr 2009 Underwater interpretation hub planned for Dolphin centre BY Tim Nash |
The Dolphin Discovery Centre in Bunbury, Western Australia, is to create an animated underwater experience thanks to a grant of AUD$173,000 (£84,000, US$125,000, 94,500 euro) from the State Government and the South West Development Commission. The development, and the financial contribution, were announced by Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls, who said: "The Dolphin Discovery Centre is moving forward with a proposal to build an interactive interpretation hub featuring a range of displays incorporating digital technology. "The plans range from a purpose-built theatrette offering animated underwater tours, to an expansion of the centre's cafe and dining facilities. "This is an exciting project that will place a new focus on marine-based tourism and educational experiences to further heighten the centre's appeal as a tourist site. "This funding will be used to create detailed designs of the new concepts, fit-out of interpretive areas and help with management and marketing support." The Dolphin Discovery Centre is a not for profit organisation committed to dolphin research, education, conservation and tourism. Located 180km south of Perth, it opened in 1994 and now welcomes around 60,000 visitors a year. In 2007 it was awarded the Western Australia Tourism Award for Best Regional Tourist Attraction.
