03 Nov 2005 Tourists warned of violence in Zanzibar |
![]() Foreign tourists have been warned of the possibility of violence escalating in the Zanzibar archipelago in the wake of violent protests surrounding local presidential elections. Following protests last weekend, tourists were urged to keep a low profile and stay in their hotels. While the incumbent president of the semi-autonomous island, Amani Abeid Karume, has been sworn in for another five-year term, tension remains throughout Zanzibar, which is also currently at the height of its tourist season. It is estimated that tourism is worth more than US$600m (£338m, 497m euro) a year to the Indian Ocean islands. Close Window |
