As well as aiming to map current patterns of travel behaviour, the research will focus heavily on transport.

Visitors’ experience and perceptions of public transport will be surveyed, as well as how it affects their experience and perception of Scotland. The scope and limitations of existing transport provision will also be looked at, as well as the quality of transport information available.

The results of the survey will be used to identify gaps in literature and areas for further research on tourist travel behaviour. It will also advise the Scottish Executive on how to further understand tourist travel behaviour in Scotland and how to develop future transport policy.

The research is being led by Dr Karen Thompson of the Scottish Tourism Research Unit and Dr Neil Ferguson of the Department of Civil Engineering.
