Work begins on £400m Chinese tower

Construction work has begun on a 6bn yuan (£400m, US$710m, 560m euros) mixed-used tower in the city of Guangzhou in China.

The 432m-high Guangzhou Zhujiang’s New Town West Tower will house a 370-room, five-star hotel at its top and will be China’s tallest building.

Other facilities will include a podium-level conference centre, an underground retail area, sightseeing towers and more than 50,000sq m (540,000sq ft) of serviced apartments.

Designed by UK-based Wilkinson Eyre Architects and Arup, the project is expected to be completed in 2009 and is to form part of the planned twin towers on the site.

The scheme will form an integral part of the city’s ongoing regeneration programme in preparation for the Asian Games, which are to be held in the city in November 2010. Details: www.wilkinsoneyre.com
