09 Feb 2006 Cost savings help disadvantaged kids |
![]() An Australian youth group will be updating its sports and recreation clubs this year to stop more children becoming offenders or victims of crime. Founded in 1937, the Police and Community Youth Clubs (PCYC) works to help young people develop the qualities to become responsible citizens. It has more than 30,000 members and offers 1,400 children from disadvantaged backgrounds free membership each year. Clubs offer a range of fitness activities, as well literacy and numeracy classes. PCYC is making significant savings thanks to the recent installation of a Gladstone leisure management system, and plans to plough the money back into its 55 clubs by equipping them with the latest equipment and investing in staff training.
