Fitness First to move into India

Fitness First, the UK-based fitness chain, has announced its intention to launch the brand in India.

The company’s current aim is to launch around 20 clubs, investing around £1m per property, and own 100 per cent of the operations.

However, a spokesperson for the company said: “If a potential partner could add strategic value to the project then this would be considered.”

Vikram Bhatia, an Indian national who has worked for the company for three years, will head up the rollout scheme.

Fitness First already has more than 1.2 million members worldwide served by 450 clubs in 15 countries, making it the world’s largest non-franchised health club chain.

The company estimates that its first Indian club would open late this year or early next year. Details: www.fitnessfirst.com
