The 45,000sq m (49,800sq ft) National Art Center will comprise ten display rooms as well as a library, auditorium and shop.

A glass atrium – designed by architect Kisho Kurokawa – will feature two inverted cone structures containing a café and restaurant. In addition, the foyer will be surrounded by trees to provide an outside forested public area.

The Nitten Exhibition will display a collection of more than 12,000 works each year in five of the exhibition rooms, supported by the Nitten Fine Arts Group.

The inaugural temporary exhibit – called Living in the Material World: 'Things' in Art of the 20th Century and Beyond – will feature 500 works of 20th century international art in 6,000sq m (64,500sq ft) of exhibition space. Details: www.nact.jp
