Outdoor sports facility opens in Devonport

Plymouth City Council (PCC) has officially unveiled a new adiZone at Mutton Cove in Devonport.

Olympic athlete Craig Pickering was in attendance at a event to mark the opening of the 625sq m (6,727sq ft) outdoor sports facility on 27 August, which has been devised by sportswear company Adidas.

Originally installed in four of the London 2012 host boroughs, the adiZone concept is now being rolled out across the country to provide facilities for a range of sports, including tennis, football and climbing.

PCC's sports development unit worked in partnership with the Devonport Regeneration Community Partnership to secure the facility for the area. It is also hoped the adiZone will help increase participation.

Joan Watkins, the council's cabinet member for children and young people, said: "We are committed to improving the health of our children and research shows a clear link between outdoor physical play activity, health and childhood development.

"The adiZone is an exciting venue for children with lots of opportunities for different types of sports and activities with the added benefit of being open access and free to use."
