Kolkata venue loses World Cup fixture

Kolkata's 90,000-capacity Eden Gardens ground has been stripped of the right to host the Cricket World Cup fixture between India and England on 27 February.

A venue inspection team including the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Central Organising Committee ruled that work at the venue would not be completed in time.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has now been informed by the ICC that it has to find an alternative ground for the game to be played at.

Meanwhile, three Sri Lanka venues - Colombo, Hambantota and Pallekele - and Wankheade Stadium in Mumbai, India, have been approved subject to minor works.
