Museum of Mathematics nets US$2m grant

The Museum of Mathematics, which is due to open in New York, US, in 2012, has secured a US$2m (£1.2m) grant from internet giant Google.

Located in the centre of Manhattan, the attraction will incorporate exhibits that are designed to "stimulate inquiry, spark curiosity and reveal the wonders of the maths".

The grant will go towards the development of the Museum of Mathematics and the creation of interactive and innovative displays that can be shared with attractions worldwide.

It is one of the attractions across the US and UK to be handed a share of US$12m (£7.3m) by Google, with other recipients including the New York Hall of Science.

Michael T Jones, chief technology advocate at Google, said: "By transforming the curious learners of today into the innovators of tomorrow, museums perpetuate both creativity and accomplishment."

Glen Whitney, founder and executive director of the Museum of Mathematics, added: "Google's support will not only help us raise the bar of our own museum, but will also help us create a new repertoire of exhibits that will generate enthusiasm about mathematics in science museums throughout the country and around the world."
