Council approves Coventry leisure plans
BY Pete Hayman

Coventry City Council (CCC) is to close a leisure centre after approving plans to create new swimming and community facilities at Centre AT7 in a "re-provisioning" of services.

Under the proposals backed by the council's cabinet last month, a new complex comprising a 25m pool; a leisure and learner pool; and a health suite will be built in north east Coventry.

The project will lead to the closure of Foleshill Sports and Leisure Centre, which the council said had seen participation fall by 60 per cent despite a GBP1.1m investment since 1995.

It is thought the scheme will cost GBP8.1m and will be funded by CCC, although Coventry and Warwickshire Award Trust will oversee the development as owner of Centre AT7.

Grant funding worth no more than GBP650,000 will be made available to the trust as part of the cabinet's decision, with designs and a finance model to go before councillors in autumn.
