16 May 2012 £12m east London park regeneration scheme completed BY Pete Hayman |
Tower Hamlets mayor Lutfur Rahman has officially unveiled the new-look Victoria Park in Bow, London, following the completion of a £12m regeneration programme. Improvements undertaken at the park were drawn up in consultation with local residents and users, with the scheme including the construction of a new community facility and café. An improved model boating lake; upgraded sports facilities; and a rebuilt Chinese pagoda on the newly created island in the west lake also formed part of the regeneration. The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) and the Big Lottery Fund (BIG) invested £4.85m in the project under its Parks for People initiative. Tower Hamlets Council also financed the work. Wesley Kerr, chair of the HLF London Committee, said: "For HLF and BIG this is one of eight major park regenerations across London due to complete this year, the biggest investment since Victorian times."
