08 Jun 2012 Council to close Gosport leisure centre earlier than planned BY Pete Hayman |
Gosport Borough Council (GBC) has revealed that Hampshire's Holbrook Leisure Centre will shut on 30 June - earlier than initially planned - due to "serious damage" to its roof. According to the local authority, the facility "deteriorated considerably" during last winter before a storm in April "tore half of the roof away about the main pool". GBC said the £35,000 cost of replacing the centre's roof could not be "justified", with Holbrook Leisure Centre to be replaced by the new Gosport Leisure Park in early 2013. The new complex - to be operated by DC Leisure on behalf of the council - will comprise a a 70-station gym and is currently being built by Willmott Dixon. GBC leader Mark Hook said: "It is regrettable that we have not been able to keep Holbrook open for a little longer but the roof blowing off has been the final straw. "It will cost a lot of money to repair for a short period of time and I just cannot justify the expenditure from public funds." Details: www.gosport.gov.uk Close Window |
