More than 700 schoolchildren from across Sheffield have become the first to experience the PopUpArena - a small-scale Olympic-style stadium - as part of a week-long athletics event.

The pop up facility includes a 100m circular athletics track and a 40m straight, with children taking part in running, throwing and jumping disciplines as part of the project.

Installed at Norton Lees' Newfield Secondary School, the PopUpArena project was operated by South Yorkshire Sport and funded by England Athletics and the Youth Sport Trust.

England Athletics CEO Chris Jones said: "The PopUpArena project aims to give youngsters an experience, perhaps their first experience, of track and field in a stadium environment.

"We want to make sure that there is a meaningful and lasting sporting legacy from the Olympics and activities like the PopUpArena project are a great way of achieving this."
