Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust (WLCT) has opened temporary fitness facilities in Selby, North Yorkshire, following a fire at the town's Abbey Leisure Centre earlier this year.

The new Profiles Health and Fitness Centre includes a 400sq m (4,306sq ft) gym and 80sq m (861sq ft) dance studio - housed at a former bingo club on Portholme Crescent.

London 2012 supplier Technogym has provided 85 pieces of equipment for the gym, while WLCT confirmed that a programme of fitness classes will be held in the new centre.

WLCT chief executive Stuart Murray said: "Working with Selby District Council, we have re-opened in less than four months following the fire."

Abbey Leisure Centre sustained "significant damage" as a result of February's fire, which came 18 months after a £1.1m revamp of the facilities had been completed.

WLCT and owner Selby District Council will now work with insurers to determine the next step forward, with a view to relaunching leisure services at the site.
