02 Jul 2012 EUR4.5m funding for new 'Active Travel' towns across Ireland BY Pete Hayman |
Irish public transport minister Alan Kelly has announced EUR4.5m (£3.6m) towards the creation of new walking and cycling infrastructure through the Active Travel Towns programme. The initiative will see 11 locations throughout Ireland receive funding for local cycling and walking strategies, which are designed to encourage more people to become more active in their travel. Kelly said: "We have moved away from just funding piece-meal projects to try and get a combined planned approach to walking and cycling and linking it to a town as a whole strategy."
