27 Sep 2012 Sport Wales launches new children's sport initiative BY Tom Walker |
![]() Sport Wales is to launch a new initiative designed to help primary school children in Wales learn more core physical skills in order to become "more confident sportspeople". The new Dragon Multi-Skills and Sport blueprint, which will be for children at key stages 1 and 2 (primary school ages 5-11), will be used in schools, sports clubs and community settings such as leisure centres. It will focus on embedding basic skills - such as agility, balance and co-ordination - that give the essential building blocks, before moving on to playing a specific sport. Chair of Sport Wales, Laura McAllister, said: "We want more children playing sport to a higher standard and more children having the skills to take part in sport and physical activity through their lives. "It's important that children have the right skills as young as possible because it sets them on the path for better sporting experiences. "At the moment we have pockets of excellent practice in developing the skills of children but we want to make that consistent across the board." Working with sport and physical education professionals from across Wales and the UK, evidence for the blueprint was taken from countries such as Canada, New Zealand and Australia - seen traditionally as having strong school sport systems.
