24 Oct 2012 New strategy for Milton Keynes' underused cycling network BY Tom Walker |
![]() Milton Keynes Council has begun a public consultation on its Draft Cycling Strategy which looks to outline initiatives to encourage more people to use the city's cycling infrastructure to work and for leisure. The city's unique network of Redways already allows cyclists and pedestrians to travel across the city without having to use the grid roads except at crossing points. Currently, however, the network is underused and the council wants to come up with ways to encourage people to use the Redways as means of commuting to work or school as well as for leisure. Among the suggestions are a bike loan scheme similar to the 'Boris Bikes' in London, additional and improved cycle parking, signage and an online journey planner. Councillor John Bint, cabinet member for Transport and Highways, said: "This strategy lays out the council's plans to implement a number of innovative projects to help promote and encourage people in Milton Keynes to cycle more. "The benefits of cycling are numerous and can help people to keep fit and healthy, cut down on fuel and parking costs to help the domestic budget as well as doing their bit for the environment by choosing a low carbon, green form of transport."
