Planners give Universal extension thumbs up

Construction is scheduled to start this summer on an extension to Universal Studios theme park in Los Angeles.

The US$1.6bn (£1bn, 1.2bn euro) project is expected to add around 391 acres at Universal City Plaza, which will comprise studio space, office buildings, retail space, a 500-bed hotel and a new theme park attraction The Wizarding World of Harry Potter.

The company has agreed to invest US$100m (£65m, 77m euro) in transportation and transit improvements to mitigate the project’s impact on traffic. A further US$13.5m (£8.7m, 10.4m euro) will fund green space and bike paths.
