03 May 2013 Senses exhibition opens at The Park Gallery BY Tim Nash |
![]() 'Senses', by Fraser Ross, opens on Saturday 4th May 2013 at The Park Gallery, Falkirk. Fraser Ross is an artist and designer based in Glasgow. His work is inspired by the unique plant life found only in Scotland. In this exhibition he is investigating human interaction through shape changing projects that explore and subvert the senses. Plants and organisms inspire this solo exhibition, expanding this theme, as plants are a fundamental part of life, they generate oxygen, food and produce medicine that allow humans and other life forms to exist. His work explores natural light, movement, feelings, smells and sounds and his practice holds a great significance on design, in particular the pursuit of function. This exhibition shows the organic processes that intrigue the artist but with the work itself operating as a scientific experiment in which the viewer is cast as the test. "A Breath of Life is a captivating piece", says Gillian Smith, ADO Community Engagement , Falkirk Community Trust. "When the viewer blows into the jar, the flowers begin to change shape and, for a brief moment, they 'bloom'. Another highlight of the exhibition is a piece inspired by celebrated Falkirk born plant collector and explorer George Forrest, who was born in Falkirk in 1873 and became famous as a worldwide plant hunter". There are a number of talks and workshops to attend over the summer months. Close Window |
