26 Jun 2014 Ananda Spa in the Himalayas combats teenage obesity BY Helen Andrews |
![]() The Ananda destination spa in the Himalayas, India, will open its doors to teenagers between the ages of 14 and 19 as part of its annual “Teen Fit Programme” to combat global obesity and teach the youngsters how to achieve a sense of balance. The activity programme includes trekking through the Himalayan foothills, rafting in the ancient Ganga River, daily yoga, meditation and breathing exercises – all of which are aimed at being beneficial for mind, body and soul. The 24,000sq ft (2,230sq m) Ananda Spa – focused mainly on Ayurveda therapies, detox, weight loss and fitness – is addressing the health issues arising from the common combination of minimal exercise and poor diets which often lead to adolescent obesity. Statistics provided by the UK government, which revealed that 61.3 per cent of adults and 30 per cent of children aged between two and 15 are overweight, have made schemes like Ananda’s annual teen fitness programme more important for global health.
