Tom Dixon's Mondrian Hotel, London, now open

Tom Dixon and Design Research Studio (DRS) have unveiled Europe’s first Mondrian Hotel by Morgans Hotel Group on London’s Southbank.

Located in Platner-designed Sea Containers House along the River Thames, the building was originally conceived to hold a luxury hotel but ended up as offices due to its location. Giving part of the structure back for its intended use is Tom Dixon and DRS, who have created a 359-bedroom hotel in the property.

The hotel's design takes inspiration from Sea Containers House, which echoes a large cruise liner, moored alongside the Thames. Internally, Dixon continues the theme using nautical references such as a handcrafted copper hull greeting visitors at the hotels entrance.

Other features of the Mondrian London include a 56-seat screening room, fitness facilities including a gym, a rooftop bar and an exclusive restaurant while the ground floor of the hotel will be dedicated to a Lazarides Editions Gallery, hosting bespoke exhibitions, screenings and events.

A further asset for the Mondrian is Morgans' in-house spa brand the Agua Bathhouse & Spa. The boutique spa has six treatment rooms, one of which is a dedicated couples space. There are two steamrooms, a hammam, spa lounge and a glamour room.

Offering varied treatment menu, Agua has teamed up a number of consumer-facing wellness brands including Natura Bissé; House of Soveral by sought-after facialist Alexandra Soveral; Glam Glow mud; and Dr Jackson’s Natural Products among others. The spa will also serve food from a raw menu.

The hotel and spa both opened to the public Tuesday (30 September), with the spa based on a the concept of Roman Baths, attempting to create a new social hub for visitors to the hotel. Dixon has also had a hand in the spa's design, which can be seen in the Copper Hull Water Pool feature (above).
