Atlanta spa chain to launch its first out-of-state day spa

Spa Sydell, a chain of five metro Atlanta spas in the US state of Georgia, is planning to launch its first out-of-state location in Huntsville, Alabama, at a US$50m (€44.5m, £32m) mixed-use retail development called Shops at Merchants Walk.

RCP Companies, a boutique real estate and asset management firm, has been in negotiations with Spa Sydell since mid-2014, according to local media. The 5,500sq ft (511sq m) spa location will offer more than 75 customisable spa treatments including facials, massages, manicures, pedicures, airbrush tanning, body wraps, polishes, waxes, microdermabrasion and peels.

“Spa Sydell is unlike any other spa we have in town and has much to offer Huntsville by taking health, wellness and results to the next level through their top of the line services and quality products,” a RCP spokesperson told AL.com.

Founded in 1982, Spa Sydell opened its first location in the Buckhead neighbourhood of Atlanta and is led by CEO Reina Bermudez. Two more Atlanta sites are also in the pipeline for Spa Sydell.

Retail offerings at the development are also set to include a 42,000sq ft (3,902sq m) Whole Foods shop, which is expected to employ 175-200 staff when it opens.

The city’s director of urban development has said the shopping location will generate approximately US$59.75m (€53m, £39m) in new sales taxes and US$1.4m (€1.2m, £0.9m) in property taxes over 25 years.

RCP Companies is also involved in the US$70m (€62m, £45m) downtown Huntsville CityCentre at Big Spring mixed-use development. Expected to break ground in April, the first phase of the project will feature a new-to-market boutique hotel, 30,000sq ft (2,787sq m) of restaurants and retail, 53,000sq ft (4,924sq m) of office loft space, family apartments and parking.
