Brazil's Kurotel becomes first 'cancer aware' spa in south America

The Kurotel Longevity Medical Center and Spa in Brazil is the first wellness location in south America to become certified as ‘cancer aware’ by Wellness for Cancer – the first organisation to establish standardised, objective, cancer-focused training and business criteria for the spa and wellness industry.

By partnering with Spafinder Wellness, Wellness for Cancer has been able to teach many locations how to provide safe, therapeutic and treatment services to clients who have experienced, or are living with cancer. Spafinder Wellness and Wellness for Cancer partnered in October to help people suffering from cancer, or the repercussions post-illness, find qualified wellness providers.

According to the World Cancer Fund, 30 to 40 per cent of all cancers can be prevented by following a healthy lifestyle. The Kurotel Center, however, believes this number can be much higher if a healthy lifestyle is adopted early on.

“Having cancer at some point in life should not be considered a matter of luck,” said Mariela Silveira – co-owner and medical director of Kurotel. “We are also agents in the process of increasing or decreasing our vulnerability to developing the disease.”

Therefore Kurotel has put together a comprehensive cancer recovery programme tailored to the individual needs of clients to help them ‘regain confidence and return to a normal life’. At the end of their stay, guests take home an individualised kit with medical tests, exams, assessments, eating plan and easy recipes.

“Our goal is to help those living with cancer easily find ‘cancer aware’ wellness locations, like Kurotel, with confidence,” said Mia Kyricos, chief brand officer of Spafinder Wellness. “Cancer patients and survivors are among those who need wellness services the most, and through our partnership with Wellness for Cancer, we can help them lead healthier lifestyles and decrease the stress and anxiety associated with cancer.”
