Sport England gears up for board changes

The Department of Culture, Media and Sport will appoint up to six new board members for Sport England in the coming year as five prepare to step down from their posts.

Clare Connor OBE, director of women’s cricket at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB), Hanif Malik and Peter Rowley will exit in October, after completing a maximum of two terms of three years each.

Olympic gold medal-winning athlete Sally Gunnell OBE and Mark Spelman will leave after just one term in October.

Debbie Jevans CBE, Charles Reed, Ian Drake, Kate Bosomworth and David Goldstone have all been reappointed to the board by culture secretary John Whittingdale. Their upcoming tenures will last between 28 October 2016 to 27 October 2019, with the exception of Drake, whose term ends in the preceding year.

A total of 12 board members can be appointed to the Sport England board, including chair Nick Bitel, meaning the DCMS can appoint up to six new board members to replace the outgoing five. An announcement on the new appointments will be made in the coming months.
