School Games and CSP reviews conclude, while Olympic success boosts swimming

Every good review must come to an end, and indeed two concluded this week. Sport England gave its backing to the continued work of the School Games following six-months of scrutiny, while Sports Think Tank director Andy Reed filed the work he had done on the future of County Sports Partnerships (CSP) to sports minister Tracey Crouch a few hours later.

While both Sport England and Reed demonstrated their confidence in the School Games and CSPs respectively, both set out recommendations to streamline their future and work in harmony with the desired outcomes of the government’s Sporting Future strategy, giving Crouch and her team food for thought.

Sports minister in Brazil

The sports minister had been in Brazil cheering on Team GB up until a few days ago. As well as taking in the action she used her visit to Rio to discuss the employment prospects for women in the sport sector with fellow ministers of sport, and how they can be improved.

One thing that may cheer Crouch is the suggestion by fellow MPs that she should be supported in her role with other sport-focused ministers in other government departments, such as health and education, to make sure Sporting Future is a truly cross-departmental project.

Participation: The Olympic effect

She will also be pleased to hear that participation in swimming has increased since the start of the Rio Games, fuelled by the medal successes of Adam Peaty and Siobhan-Marie O’Connor. Archery is also looking to get in on the act, establishing a three-year partnership with the National Trust to try and get thousands more involved in the sport.
