Disney blocks out pass holder dates for Animal Kingdom, fuelling speculation over World of Avatar launch date

Speculation has risen over the opening date for Disney’s highly-anticipated World of Avatar after the operator blocked-out pass holder dates in May and June for its Animal Kingdom park only.

Animal Kingdom – which is hosting the immersive Avatar-themed land – has blocked out availability on new discounted multi-day tickets for Florida residents between 27 May until 9 June. The Memorial Day holiday takes place on 30 May, which has led to the speculation that the new attraction will open ahead of that weekend.

The themed zone is set to include a number of sites unique to the world of the 2009 Avatar movie, including its floating mountains and bioluminescent rainforests, and a number of rides and attractions, such as the family friendly Na’vi River Journey and the Avatar Flight of Passage ride over the alien world of Pandora.

Orlando is going to be busy during that week, with Universal also launching its new Volcano Bay waterpark on 25 May, which the operator promises will redefine the waterpark experience with everything from virtual queueing to immersive theming.

The tropically-themed Volcano Bay will complement Universal’s existing Cabana Bay Beach Resort, with visitors able to visit the waterpark as a single experience or as part of a three-park ticket in conjunction with the operator’s other two Orlando theme parks.
