Members of European Spa Association gather in Italy for annual Congress

The 22nd annual European Spa Association (ESPA) Congress took place last week in Rome and Tivoli Terme, Italy, bringing together representatives from spa associations across Europe along with scientists, industry representatives and suppliers, to discuss the theme of ‘Innovation for medical spas and health resorts in Europe.’

ESPA is an umbrella organisation representing members from 19 European countries, with a goal to promote spas and balneology in Europe. Throughout the event, there was talk of uniting the different member countries’ spa associations to better fund and promote scientific research into the benefits of balneology.

Trends in preventative healthcare, innovations, financing, regulations, research and marketing were all discussed over the two-day conference, held at the Palazzo Cardinal Cesi in Rome and the Hotel Victoria Terme in Tivoli Terme.

The event got underway with a flag parade, with members of each country represented taking part, and included a gala dinner, where winners of the ESPA Innovation Awards announced.

Research topics included the effect of mud bath therapy on osteoarthritis of the knee – both from a pain management and a cost-effectiveness perspective; key findings on how medical doctors view balneology therapy in Italy; how children can use medical spas; and how spas can map their water’s unique “DNA” profile.

The annual event is held in a different European member country each year; next year’s ESPA Congress will take place in The Netherlands.
