Luxury spa opens at Salt Ayre Leisure Centre

Lancaster City Council (LCC) has launched a luxury spa at the Salt Ayre Leisure Centre in Lancaster.

Facilities at the 420sqm (4,520sq ft) Tranquil Spa spa include three treatment rooms, two saunas, a salt Inhalation room, aroma steamroom, health shower and Ice Chute as well as a large relaxation area and two nail bars.

There are also three individual shower rooms, six changing rooms and a separate, fully accessible shower room and toilet for disabled guests.

Treatments at the spa are supplied by Elemis and Ishga and include a range of therapeutic and rejuvenating face and body care treatments.

The opening of the spa completes the second phase of a £5m, 10-year redevelopment partnership between Lancaster City Council and Alliance Leisure, which has seen specialist leisure developer, Createability carry out the construction works alongside architects Bignell, Shacklady, Ewing.

Completed in 2017, the first phase of the works included the installation of a Les Mills indoor cycling studio, an 80-station fitness suite by Precor, an adventure play area and an XHeight climbing wall.

According to Mark Walters, senior construction project manager at Createability, the project is unique for a publicly-owned facility.

“The specification and level of finish is extremely high end,” Walters said. “It’s not what you typically expect to see when you walk into a council-run leisure centre.”

Councillor Darren Clifford, LCC’s cabinet member for leisure, added that the redevelopment has focused on creating a facility which will appeal to all ages, including people with disabilities, mobility and stability issues, as well as those recovering from an injury.

"The opening of Tranquil Spa marks another milestone in our vision of creating a leisure destination that has something for the entire community to enjoy,” Clifford said.

“We’re already seeing the clear rewards of our £5m investment in the centre, with a 72 per cent increase in customer visits. The new spa perfectly complements the other new facilities that have done so much to breathe new life into Salt Ayre.”
