22 Feb 2018 GLL to revamp Croydon’s leisure facilities as part of 20-year management deal BY Tom Walker |
Leisure operator GLL will redevelop all sports and leisure facilities owned by Croydon London Borough Council (CLBC), as part of a long-term deal to manage the sites on behalf of the council. The charitable social enterprise has secured a 20-year deal to operate the council’s leisure portfolio, which includes seven leisure centres, The Arena athletics track and a number of parks, outdoor pitches and playing courts. GLL will take over the management of the sites on 1 March – which will result in all leisure centres closing for 24 hours to allow GLL carry out a rebrand and some “essential works” on the facilities. As part of the management deal, GLL has pledged to upgrade all of the council-owned fitness facilities and refit each gym with upgraded equipment. The centres were previously operated by Fusion Lifestyle. According to Timothy Godfrey, CLBC’s cabinet member for culture, leisure and sport, the deal with GLL will see the council make savings of more than £1m by 2021 – and ensure there will be no need for further public subsidies for the duration of the agreement. “Through this partnership, we will deliver first-class leisure facilities that residents deserve,” Godfrey said. “This will bring together a transformation of our leisure centres, combined with activity in 30 parks across Croydon.” Close Window |
