MVRDV share details of green-roofed emporium in Taiwan

Dutch design firm MVRDV have revealed renderings of their plan to create an open-air marketplace and urban escape in Tainan, Taiwan.

The new attraction, which recently broke ground, will be divided into two areas: a ground-floor trading area – set to host vending stalls and kiosks – and a rooftop park.

Landscaped to resemble terraced paddy fields, the green expanse will function as a recreational retreat and feature benches, picnic tables, and fruit gardens.

The park will also boast a four-storey visitor centre with dining, events, and office facilities.

"Tainan Market can become a building that symbolises the beauty of Tainan's agriculture fields, farms, sea, and mountains, as it compliments both landscape and its surrounding environment," said Winy Maas, principal at MVRDV.

"It is completely functional and caters to the needs for auctioning, selling, and buying goods, but its terraced roof with its collection of growing products will allow visitors to take in the landscape while escaping from bustle below."

The market, one of MVRDV's many ongoing projects in Taiwan, is expected to be completed in 2020.
