Precor partners with tech giant Sony to deliver smart gym solution

Fitness kit supplier Precor has signed a deal with Sony, which will see Precor equipment being made compatible with the tech giant's smart gym solution Advagym.

The pilot agreement means operators with Precor-kitted gyms can now offer a complete tracking journey for members’ workout regimes.

Members using Advagym activate it by touching their phone on a sensor ‘puck’ on equipment to start tracking their workout in real time.

The system uses sensor on strength machines to record reps and sets, while in free weight areas users select from a list of exercises or create their own. Advagym then uploads all stats automatically onto the app.

The app also logs favourite workouts and preferred machine settings and enables PTs and gym staff to increase interaction with members by creating bespoke training programmes and feeding back on progress.

This means that operators can use the solution to monitor use of equipment and gain insights into user preferences.

The first club using Precor equipment to install the Advagym system is Beechdown Health and Fitness Club in Basingstoke.

“We believe digital workouts will help motivate our members – they can even add short notes for each exercise, such as, if it was easy or if they were sore," said Ed Lindley-Hare, club manager at Beechdown Health and Fitness Club.

"Keeping track of resistance workouts can be difficult but the Advagym is simple to use, and because it links with Precor’s Preva, our members’ data is all pulled across into one place, so they can see their entire workout journey at a glance.”

Henrik Bengtsson senior business manager, Advagym said: “As everyone carries a mobile with them nowadays, the system is super simple for members to engage with."
