ONZ Architects to transform abandoned stadium into eco-park with 'green wings'

Ankara-based design office ONZ Architects have revealed plans to transform Antakya Atatürk Stadium in Hayat, Turkey into an elevated green park with a perimeter that curves upwards to form "green wings".

The project, which is currently under construction, will see the 1950s-era sports complex gain a wealth of recreational facilities and attractions, such as an open-air theatre, a library, an arts centre, and a nature preserve.

The site – expected to reinvigorate the town and encourage community engagement – will also play host to hiking and biking paths.

To increase accessibility, the as-yet-unnamed scheme will also feature a basement-level car park.

"The desire for preserving social history created a demand for a design with similar ambitions in the place of this stadium, which acted as an interaction centre and a meeting point for the city," said ONZ.

"For this reason, this structure is more than just a stadium for the city residents; it’s also a place where the remains of past cultural practices maintain their vital importance for the common memory and identity of society."
