Towodesign create 'bird’s nest' café in Shanghai

Chinese studio Towodesign have completed work on Dr. Bravura – a health-centric eatery in Shanghai that specialises in a unique delicacy: bird's nests.

The 119 sq m space, which the architects have said is based on the concept of "Research and Development for Health" is furnished with a number of gold-painted stands, shelves, and lighting fixtures, as well as art gallery-like glass displays.

Each hexagonal display – shaped to simulate the structure of chemical formulas – houses a bird's nest product, which customers can purchase and consume in the café's lounge area.

Bird's nest, one of the most expensive and sought-after foods in the world, is mainly sourced from limestone caves in Indonesia and is reputed to have wide-ranging health benefits.

Other dining options include a variety of dishes with traditional ingredients, all of which – according to the architects – are "grounded in nutrition science".

Dr. Bravura is one of 85 entries in the café category for this year's Restaurant and Bar Design Awards.

The shortlist is scheduled to be announced on 18 June.
