Henning Larsen win competition to design mountain-like park in Denmark

Architecture office Henning Larsen have been chosen to revitalise a 30,000 sq m seafront park in Esbjerg, Denmark.

The architects' plans will see the centuries-old public space transformed into a “city mountain” with new footpaths, artificial ponds, and an expansive amphitheatre.

“We are reconnecting the city back with its environment,” said Salka Kudsk, Head of Landscape at Henning Larsen.

She continued: “It was initially practical, holding the sand in place and protecting the city from the wind. Over the years, it became a gathering place, but this identity has become less strong in recent years.

“In our new design, the park will offer sensory experiences all year around, establishing it once again as the heart of Esbjerg.”

According to the judging committee, the firm's concept was chosen for its potential to facilitate “social cohesion”.

“It’s in dialogue with the Danish garden architectural tradition,” the committee said.

Other members of the winning project team include landscape specialists Topotek1, engineering consultancy INGENIØR'NE, and contemporary artist Eva Koch.

Partial funding for the estimated £3m (US$3.8m, €3.3m) scheme will be provided by the Danish Arts Foundation and the municipality of Esbjerg.
