Doone Silver Kerr's 20-room shipping container hotel makes efficient use of space

Doone Silver Kerr (DSK) have used 25 shipping containers, each 30ft (9m) in length, to create a 20-room aparthotel with design elements that optimise the use of space.

Designed for Stow Projects and Ciel Capital, the Stow-Away hotel comprises five levels each made up of five containers.

A reception area and restaurant are housed on the ground floor, with the guest rooms making up the upper four floors.

In order to ensure adequate facilities were provided in each room, DSK sought to optimise their use of the space available with simple but flexible configurations.

Each room contains a sleeping-cum-lounging area, a bathroom with a walk-in shower and a kitchen with a dishwasher, sink, microwave, portable hotplate, table and chairs.

King-size beds are slotted neatly into the end of each container with bedside shelves running along the sides.

TVs are mounted along one side of each bed, meanwhile, with a cushioned backrest opposite so that the area can double as a lounge space.

To give a visual sense of space and prevent a 'tunnel effect', DSK's colour palette gradually shifts from light to dark.

The interiors are clad with self-finished surfaces, such as stone and stained and natural plywood, which help to maximise the internal space, durability and longevity.

High-quality finishes like timber and marble are also used in the detailing of the rooms.

Outside, a façade of projecting fins provides a striking aesthetic, as well as contributing to privacy and solar-shading. The appearance of the façade changes when viewed from different angles.

Sean Bignold, associate at DSK, said: "Our philosophy of design is rooted in a commitment to rational building; eschewing extravagance but focusing on precise detailing and the thoughtful use of materials. Stow-Away is the embodiment of all these values."
