Future Project shortlist revealed for World Architecture Festival 2019 Awards

The shortlist has been revealed for the Future Project Award at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) 2019 Awards and it includes a water-touch bungee jump, a ribbon-like pathway and a kinetic bridge.

The category announcement follows that of the wider awards shortlist in October and contains five nominees.

Waitomo Bungy Tower by Ignite

The 55m (180ft)-high tower will not only offer New Zealand’s highest water-touch bungee jump, but will also feature its tallest and longest dry slide and be its tallest timber structure. The tower will be the main attraction of the Waitomo Sky Garden attraction.

The Circle of Good Hope by GLH Architects

An infrastructure and attraction proposal for Cape Town aimed at reconnecting the city to the sea and its surroundings, with an iconic gateway to enhance the city’s Table Mountain backdrop and a Ferris Wheel-like ride.

Çanakkale Antenna by Powerhouse

A combined visitor centre and multimedia broadcasting tower, located on the outskirts of the historic Turkish city of Çanakkale. The roof of the rich red corten steel ribbon becomes an open-air path through the forest, offering breath-taking views of the Dardanelles (or Çanakkale Strait).

Bandy stadium by SPEECH

The planned stadium for Syktyvkar in Komi, Russia, features an ice arena for ice hockey matches, short-track speed skating and figure skating. The arena is set within an aerodynamic envelope that combines a membrane façade and transparent apertures for a visually arresting finish.

Wynyard Crossing by Monk Mackenzie | BECA | EADON | Athfield

Designed by a multidisciplinary team, this sculptural pedestrian bridge is reminiscent of modern yacht masts or the wings of a seabird. It is aimed at being a new landmark for Auckland’s urban waterfront, with its wings opening to allow boats to pass beneath.

Shortlisted teams will present their projects to international juries in front of delegates during the festival, which runs from 4-6 December.

The category winner will then go on to compete for the overall awards of World Building of the Year, Future Project of the Year, Interior of the Year and Landscape of the Year.
