maison h unveil design for Beijing 2022's Winter Olympics Museum

maison h have unveiled designs for a Winter Olympics Museum to be built in the mountains north of Beijing in Chongli, China, that is aimed at building on the legacy of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and will form part of the 2022 Winter Olympics development.

The museum is part of a broader project to revitalize the city centre by improving the quality of public space and connecting and adding programs in the area.

The building is designed with sustainability as a central factor, with PV panels on the roof to help achieve net zero power use.

Other features include self-shading façade overhangs and minimal window openings on the south and west sides to help passively regulate temperature.

The museum will be integrated into its immediate surroundings, with sloping terrain used to provide access to every floor.

In addition to galleries for exhibitions about the development of the Winter Olympics, the venue will house libraries and research facilities, a youth training centre with a virtual reality experience element, a mountain sports centre and facilities for commercial and conference functions.

Martijn de Geus, partner at maison h, said: "The design follows the Olympic Spirit and proposes a welcoming and fluid space that is open, inclusive and without dividing walls. The landscape is seamlessly interwoven to become indoor exhibition areas, a climbing wall or conference seating."
