Kerry Hill Architects design mountainside resort for Aman in Japan

Kerry Hill Architects have designed a spa and wellness resort on a mountainside in Hokkaido – their fourth resort in Japan for hotel operator Aman, following the opening of Aman Kyoto.

The Aman Niseko resort is to be an all-season retreat situated among the mountain, forest and river surroundings of Mount Moiwa.

It is designed to take advantage of the setting by framing the forest and mountain scenery from inside and providing more expansive views from outdoor terraces.

The resort will accommodate 30 guest rooms, 31 residences, wellness facilities and a number of restaurants on a 187ha (462ac) site.

The spa will feature single and double treatment suites, pre-treatment lounges, relaxation pods and extensive thermal spa areas, while fitness facilities will include an indoor lap pool and an aqua fitness pool.

A kids club, meanwhile, will feature an indoor playground, a bowling alley, a games zone, a theatre, a half basketball court and indoor swimming and wading pools.

Vladislav Doronin, chairman and CEO of Aman, said: "Aman Niseko is designed in harmony with its expansive and serene surroundings and the resort and residences will embrace Aman's devotion to detail and impeccable service. This all-season resort will be a haven of peacefulness immersed in the purest Japanese scenery with the renowned thoughtfulness of Japanese hospitality."

The resort is scheduled to open in 2023.
