Catanian's abstract noodle tree envelops a Beijing restaurant

Catanian have created a sculptural installation for a noodle restaurant in Beijing that takes the form of an abstract tree made of thin white noodle-like threads.

The dining area of the Tingzhen Beef Rice Noodles restaurant provides just 50sq m (538sq ft) of space, but Catanian were keen to make it unique.

Inspired by the client's memories of his grandmother's beef rice noodles when he was a child, they wanted to make a space that would contribute to and help to strengthen the memories made by guests at the restaurant.

The complex arrangement of interlacing white threads that make up the tree structure symbolises memories, while the threads also reference white rice noodles.

The tree rises and spreads across the ceiling of the space, as well as partially back down its walls.

It is highlighted against the restaurant's black walls with lighting from behind and stands out against an otherwise sleek black aesthetic.

Wang Zhongli, designer at Catanian, said: "When the guests sit down and have a bowl of beef rice noodles that carry memories, they would be totally immersed in the ambience and experience within the space."
