Evian spa to open in Shanghai

The first Evian-branded spa outside France will open in Shanghai in early 2004.

Evian Spa Shanghai is part of Three on the Bund, a mixed leisure development in a neo-classical building on the city’s historical waterfront – the Bund.

Located on the second floor, with a 25m high atrium, the spa will offer a range of beauty treatments in 16 themed rooms. Other facilities in the building include four restaurants, and art gallery and two floors of high-end retailers.

The seven-storey building, built in 1916 and renovated by the Shanghai Institute of Design and Architecture in the 1950, offers spectacular views of the river Huangpu. Although the exterior will remain unchanged, improvements to the interior include structural reinforcements to guard against seismic activity, a grander entrance, and the restoration of original features such as tiled mosaics and stone carved fireplaces.

Architect Michael Graves is heading up architectural design on the project, while Alan Chan – who has previously worked with Coca-Cola and Mandarin Oriental – is directing the corporate and brand identity strategy and working on design concepts for the spa and one of the restaurants.

Three on the Bund is owned by investment holding company House of Three, the first privately-owned company to obtain government approval to develop and own a building on the Bund. It is the company’s first private-equity backed venture in China. Shareholders of House of Three are Nuri Investments Ltd, a Singapore-based, privately-held investment company, and Handel Lee, a Chinese-American lawayer and businessman.
