09 May 2008 Historic Scotland defends its nation’s battlefields BY Caroline Wilkinson |
Historic Scotland has launched a 12-week consultation to review the protection of Scotland’s historic battlefields. The aim is to protect important sites from inappropriate development. Culture Minister, Linda Fabiani MSP said: “The battles fought on Scottish soil are crucial to how we understand our history and identity. The intention of this consultation is to ensure they get proper recognition.” Historic Scotland proposes the creation of an inventory of battlefields and inclusion on the list would mean that a battle site was a ‘material consideration’ in the planning process. Historic Scotland has published a series of policy documents called SHEPs (Scotland’s Historic Environment Policy) and the battlefield consultation is the latest in this series. SHEPs set out the visions and strategies of Scottish ministers for Scotland’s historic environments and sit alongside and complement the Scottish Planning Policy series.
