19 Jan 2004 Making tracks to Darwin |
Services have started on Australia’s newest railway line, the A$1.3bn, 1,420km extension of the Ghan route from Alice Springs to Darwin. A freight train, nearly a mile in length, left Adelaide on 15 January and was scheduled to reach Darwin two days later. Passenger services are due to commence on 1 February and operator, Great Southern Railways, has reported that ticket sales on the new line have already exceeded A$15m. One weekly return service will operate over the new route, leaving Adelaide on Sunday and arriving back on Friday, with an arrival in Darwin on Tuesday afternoon and departure on Wednesday morning. Travel is available in either Gold – premium – or Red Kangaroo Service, with the former including complimentary hotel transfers in Darwin. Details: www.trainways.com.au Close Window |
