Barco called in to the Forbidden City

With a view to showcasing the architecture and cultural relics of Beijing’s Palace Museum, Japanese multi-media company, Toppan, asked Barco to arrange the virtual reality element of the project.

The two VR productions, ‘Hall of Supreme Harmony’ and ‘Forbidden City : The Emperor’s Palace’, reproduce the palace estate during the reigns of Emperors Kangxi and Qianlong – approximately 1660 to 1790.

They are shown on a curved screen 4.2m high by 13.5m wide, custom built by Barco, employing three Barco Galaxy WARP DLP™ projectors. Using an optical blending system, a single 13.5m wide picture is produced.

The VR theatre itself has been built inside the Forbidden City site on a 2000sq m plot. The Palace Museum owns the site, plus over one million artefacts belonging to the court collection.
